Principles and features of ultrasonic flow meters
Various types of flow meters and flow sensors are available. This section summarizes the principles and features of ultrasonic flow meters.
An additional type of flow meter technology uses an ultrasonic sensor. The most popular form of this utilises the principle known as either transit time or time of flight.
[Transit time flow meters]
Ultrasonic waves are transmitted at an angle across fluid in the pipe. Flow is measured by changes in the transit time for the ultrasonic waves. Ultrasonic waves that advance through water will be transmitted slowly when going against flow and conversely, will be transmitted quickly when going along with flow.
ULTRASONIC FLOW METER
PROS | ・There is no pressure loss ・A type that can perform detection from the outside of piping is available |
---|---|
CONS | ・A long section of straight pipe is required ・Liquids that have a large solid content will cause malfunctions ・Measurement is not possible when there are many air bubbles |
