9/10 Engineers Say Knowing These Machine Vision Tips Were Keys for Success Vol. 2

          June, 2020

Have you ever had trouble detecting an edge with a vision system? Did you know it's possible to adjust the edge detection level while viewing the edge intensity waveform? It is also possible to apply corrections at all times so that the maximum of the differential absolute value can be 100% in order to stabilize the edges for actual lines. This ensures that detections are stable even if light intensity fluctuates.

How do you stabilize inspections in locations that have large light intensity fluctuations?

          100% edge intensity correction

          OK:
The shading difference between the background and the pattern is sufficient, so stable detection is possible.

          OK:
The shading difference between the background and the pattern is small, but stable detection is possible.

1 What do you do if edge position detection is not stable?

Detection of up to 5000 edges and points

          NG:
          Wrong detection with two edges

          OK:
Measured with multiple points to eliminate abnormal points

          NG:
The detection is influenced by the points in this area.

          OK:
Unwanted points are eliminated, and detection of the circle is made possible.

          2 Profile Position

Edges along profiles can be found to calculate best fit lines and circles on geometric shapes for measurement and inspection.

          Through-hole center detection

          3 Profile Width

Profiles can be used to find the width of features or measure the diameter of circles and rings.

          4 Profile Defect

A reference profile is found on the basis of the edge and any deviations from the reference profile are considered defects. This is especially useful for burr and flaw inspections.
