What are your job responsibilities?
I cover all or parts of five states for one of our microscope groups. Mondays and Fridays I’m in the office speaking to customers and planning out my week. Tuesday through Thursday I’m on the road splitting my time between sales calls to prospective customers and service or training calls to customers I’ve sold to.
How did you learn the technical skills at KEYENCE?
My background is business and operations. Engineering was not even on my radar before I started with KEYENCE. The training program took me from a guy who barely knew the difference between microscopes and telescopes, to someone who can confidently cart in a piece of equipment to a boardroom and pitch it knowledgably to veteran engineers, scientists, and business people.
One of the comments I hear all the time from customers is, “You KEYENCE people sure do know your stuff”. KEYENCE puts a massive emphasis on their people being well-versed in our industry, the competitive landscape, and most of all our products.
What do you enjoy about your career and your position?
My favorite part of the job, from day one, has been that no two days are exactly alike. One day you’re measuring pieces going into wind turbines the size of football fields, the next day you’re in a plant making parts for military applications, and then you’re at a university measuring starfish (these are all real examples from my territory). That’s just Tuesday.
Not all the days are glamorous – but every day I get to go out and see things that very few people I graduated with get to.
What do you like about KEYENCE?
Transparency is king at KEYENCE. You always know where you stand against your goals, the rest of the team, and the rest of the nation – at any given time.
KEYENCE only promotes from within. Your boss once did, or is still doing, the same things your day to day consists of. They not only empathize with what you’re working on, they’ve been there, and can offer advice, encouragement, or even hop on the road with you and lend a hand (seriously, this happens a lot and it’s awesome). You’d be hard pressed to find a better group of leadership than the managers within KEYENCE.
Any message you would share to prospective applicants?
Getting the job at KEYENCE is extremely competitive and once you get started it is full steam ahead. It’s not for everyone and that’s okay. For those who do end up going through the interviews, I’d recommend being eager to learn, open to any opportunities, and hungry for success as you go. To put it lightly, it’s a very worthwhile team to join – best of luck!
