Vision Examples in the Commodities Industry

This is an example of an inspection of markings on the base of plastic bottles.

Key inspection points

If the marking and the background colors are similar, differentiating the colors under conventional lighting conditions is difficult, and there are cases in which the inspection loses stability and reliability. The markings can be read regardless of color differences by using LumiTrax™ mode.

Check the appearance of the lateral surfaces of copy rollers. Conventional area cameras had to capture several images to check the entirety of lateral surfaces. The inspection was often affected by uneven lighting, resulting in low accuracy.

A line scan camera can capture the lateral surface along the full circumference of a cylindrical target in one image. The inspection can use clear images without being affected by uneven lighting. Although area cameras had problems reading characters or codes on curved surfaces, line scan cameras can capture clear images of them. With the XG-X/CV-X Series, area cameras and line scan cameras can be connected simultaneously and operated in the same way. Introduction is easy.

Check the appearance of the sides of diapers. When an area camera was used, the inspection required multiple cameras to cover the large area. All of the area cameras needed to be adjusted to achieve the same lighting conditions, resulting in a lot of mounting costs and labor.

When a line scan camera is used, the combination of just a single camera and a light can capture clear images. Line scan cameras have the advantages of covering large areas with a single camera and reducing the possibility of lighting unevenness. Just a normal bar light is enough for the inspection. These can solve problems of introduction costs and mounting space. With the XG-X/CV-X Series, area cameras and line scan cameras can be connected simultaneously and operated in the same way, which saves a lot of labor.

Inspection using an area camera

The use of a large light requires both space and costs for installation.

Inspection using a line scan camera

The use of a bar light saves costs and spaces.

Using machine vision, detect foreign particles or stains adhered on non-woven fabric products such as diapers or sanitary products. Conventional machine vision systems were affected by irregular target surfaces or could not detect foreign particles or stains with low contrast.

The stain inspection mode of the XG-X/CV-X Series allows easy setting for the inspection of diapers or sanitary products for foreign particles or stains. The Shading correction filter can cancel shading on the target surface to enable the detection of only foreign particles or stains.

Check for improperly attached detergent labels. Conventional machine vision could recognize the presence of labels, but not accurately recognize deviation or other defects. The problem was that the system could find major defects only but could not find minute defects due to the influence of product tolerance.

The Profile Defect stain mode of the XG-X/CV-X Series can stably detect minute defects that deviate from the ideal line drawn along the label edge.
