What are your job responsibilities?
My overall job responsibility is to maximize my team’s output to contribute to the success of my division and therefore to the success of KEYENCE America. When you break it down, it is a combination of direct and indirect actions focusing on People, Product, Process, and Customer. Everything from getting the right people on our team, equipping them with the right resources (training, methods, clear expectations, continuous coaching), sending them out in the field to the right customers with the right product, and actively supporting them to close business. I believe if I make the individual successful then the team will be successful, and if the team is successful then KEYENCE America will be successful.
What is your motivation for working at Keyence?
The people, the challenge, and the pursuit of perfection. I came for the money in sales, but I found much more. The people: Over the years, many people have invested in me; and now I appreciate the opportunity to invest in the next generation of leaders. It is their development that allows me to continue to grow. The challenge: KEYENCE is hard, but I embrace the challenge because I want the challenge. It is what keeps the days interesting and the days short. I wake up every day knowing the work I put in will produce an output that will better my situation in some way and that I have the tools paired with support available to overcome anything. The pursuit of perfection: Continuous improvement is engrained deep in KEYENCE, and it is for me as a person too. It’s awesome that the skills I work on to better contribute to KEYENCE also supports me to be a better version of myself (a better husband, father, friend, and coach).
How would you describe our working style and culture?
Flat and focused. I care a lot about efficiency. I have had other jobs where there is a lot of non-value-added work and a lot of red tape to make a change or move forward. I truly believe at KEYENCE we are one unit focused on one thing. As an organization and at all levels, we want to sell! There is not one person here that won’t make the phone call or make the drive or flight to get it done. This to me is special about KEYENCE because we are all in it together. That is what makes our teams and organization strong.
How have you been successful in moving up in the organization?
100% doing my current role better and better. I believe you should peek at your next step but it is all about demonstrating and maximizing your current position. I was told recently that my success is a sum of incremental improvements, and I believe it is true. I may not be the most talented; but for each half for the last 20+ halves, I’ve planned and executed that plan to take my team one step forward. With each step, I create systems and checks to not go backwards. It is with this perseverance, that my team and I have been successful and with this method that I think we will see continued success.
Any message you would share to prospective applicants?
Be you … for sure a more professional version but be yourself. I don’t need people that act and think just like me. I do want hard workers and team players, but I want people that bring their own ideas and strengths who are willing to use them to continue to make KEYENCE great.
