Vision sensors are a low-cost alternative to conventionally expensive vision systems. Vision systems require a technician to fine-tune settings. The other method was controlling the pressure of the sealant nozzle, but this only let you check if it was present. Detection at a distance was once unstable but with the IV3 and its lighting attachment the solution is much more stable.
